Sprouts

Outside, the first tiny sprouts are emerging in some of the jugs. These are multicolored swiss chard.

Inside, with heat mats and lights, the seeds are fooled into sprouting very early. They are really a healthy green, but the camera has trouble correctly capturing color so close to all the grow lights. These are little, fuzzy tomatoes.

These are eggplants.

These are peppers. They are slower to come up than tomatoes and I find the seeds are more staggered, rather than sprouting all at the same time. But they are off to a good start.

You can see I need to start pricking out seedlings and potting them on to individual containers!

I am going to try your technique with the milk jugs. Is the little plastic lids at night, or do you close it to prevent frost? Do you cut the top of the jug off all the way around or just make a cut on two sides? Thanks!

It is so much fun to see the seeds sprout -- it means spring is really here, even if the weather isn't cooperating right now.
